Defendant Faces Life in Prison for Cocaine Trafficking
A shocking case of cocaine trafficking has shaken the streets of McAllen, Texas. Eddie Perez, a 29-year-old Mission man, has pleaded guilty to his role in a cocaine trafficking conspiracy.
According to authorities, Perez was involved in a transaction at a Best Buy parking lot in McAllen on October 2022. He was supposed to deliver narcotics to another individual on behalf of his friend Juan Alberto Mendez Jr., 28.
Law enforcement was conducting surveillance in the area and witnessed vehicles approaching the parking lot. Perez removed bags containing bricks of cocaine from the trunk of his vehicle, and Mendez was parked in another vehicle observing the transaction.
Immediately, law enforcement approached and arrested Perez and Mendez. A total of 20 kilograms of cocaine was seized from the scene.
Both Perez and Mendez admitted to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 20 kilograms of cocaine. U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo accepted the pleas and set sentencing for July 24, 2024.
Perez has been and will remain in custody pending sentencing, while Mendez was permitted to remain on bond pending sentencing. The Drug Enforcement Administration conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Garcia prosecuted the case.
In a harsh warning to those involved in similar activities, the court has indicated that both defendants face a minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison, as well as a possible $10 million maximum fine.
