Latham Man Arrested for Receipt of Child Pornography

A 48-year-old man from Latham, New York, has been arrested and charged with receipt of child pornography, a federal offense that carries severe penalties.

Eduardo Abreu, 48, of Latham, was taken into custody yesterday on a criminal complaint alleging that he received approximately 225 images of child pornography over the internet on or about August 21, 2024.

The charges against Abreu are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, Abreu faces a minimum of 15 years and up to 40 years in prison, a maximum fine of $250,000, and a term of post-imprisonment supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life.

Abreu was ordered detained pending a detention hearing scheduled for Thursday, August 29, before United States Magistrate Judge Christian F. Hummel.

The investigation into Abreu’s activities was led by the FBI’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Allen J. Vickey is prosecuting the case.

The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Attorney’s offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) to combat the growing problem of child exploitation and abuse.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York is committed to protecting the children of our community and bringing those who harm them to justice. The public is urged to report any suspected cases of child exploitation to the authorities immediately.
