ALBANY, NEW YORK – The grim tale of Efrain Diaz Alachan’s repeat offenses in the United States comes to a close as the 46-year-old Salvadoran citizen is handed a 21-month sentence for illegal re-entry. This is not Alachan’s first brush with the law; a man who has been deported and returned multiple times continues his downward spiral.
United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Thomas E. Feeley, Director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, announced today’s sentence. The court records paint a picture of Alachan being removed to El Salvador five times, with the last formal expulsion occurring on March 15, 2016.
Despite having been legally sent back across the border multiple times, Alachan brazenly returned to Schenectady, New York. He was caught by ICE Officers on December 18, 2018, at his residence, a stark reminder of the law’s relentless pursuit.
This is not the first time Alachan has faced charges related to illegal re-entry; he was convicted in both the Northern District of New York and the Southern District of Texas. His latest offense came under the watchful eye of Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward P. Grogan, who has seen too many like Alachan ignore the law’s warnings.
ICE-ERO conducted the investigation into Alachan’s case, with Grogan leading the prosecution effort. The consequences for his actions are now clear: a prison term that serves as a cautionary tale to others contemplating similar illegal acts.
The sentence handed down on Alachan is a stark reminder of the nation’s stance on immigration law enforcement. It also highlights the relentless efforts of federal agencies to protect American citizens from those who flout the rules, no matter how many times they attempt to return.
