LEXINGTON, Ky. – A brazen daylight robbery of a Lexington Rite Aid back in 2015 has finally landed a Cynthiana man behind bars. Miguel David Ayala, 38, was found guilty Thursday by a federal jury on charges of pharmacy robbery and possession with intent to distribute hydrocodone pills, bringing an end to a case that has lingered for over two years.
The three-day trial revealed a stark picture of the July 8, 2015, incident. Ayala, armed with a handgun, stormed the Rite Aid Pharmacy on Executive Drive and made off with an estimated 4,000 hydrocodone pills. The evidence presented wasn’t about if Ayala committed the robbery, but about proving his intent. Prosecutors successfully argued that the sheer quantity of pills stolen wasn’t for personal use, but for street-level distribution.
“This wasn’t a desperate addict looking for a fix,” a source close to the investigation told Grimy Times. “This was a calculated move to profit off the opioid crisis, and the jury saw right through it.” The DEA’s involvement suggests a larger network could be at play, though authorities are tight-lipped about any ongoing investigations related to the case.
The conviction was announced jointly by Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, Carlton S. Shier, IV, alongside representatives from the DEA Detroit Field Division (led by Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. Plancon), the Lexington Division of Police (Chief Mark G. Barnard), and the Cynthiana Police Department (Chief Ray Johnson). The collaborative effort underscores the seriousness with which federal and local agencies are treating pharmaceutical robberies.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert M. Duncan, Jr., spearheaded the prosecution, meticulously building a case based on evidence gathered by the DEA, Lexington Police, and Cynthiana Police. Ayala is now scheduled to appear before Senior Judge Joseph M. Hood on August 28, 2017, at 11:30 a.m. for sentencing. While Ayala faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, the ultimate decision rests with the judge, taking into account federal sentencing guidelines and statutes.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing. This conviction serves as a warning: robbing pharmacies and fueling the opioid epidemic won’t be tolerated. The streets of Lexington – and beyond – are a little safer thanks to the work of these investigators and the jury’s verdict.
