WASHINGTON D.C. – A former Department of Justice employee is facing felony charges after allegedly launching a wrapped sandwich at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer Sunday night. Sean Charles Dunn, 37, was charged with one count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and employees of the United States, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court.
The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. on the 2000 block of 14th Street NW, where Metro Transit Police and CBP officers were conducting patrol. Dunn allegedly approached an officer, unleashing a tirade of verbal abuse – shouting “F— you! You f—ing fascists! Why are you here? I don’t want you in my city!” – before forcefully throwing a sub-style sandwich, striking the officer in the chest. The entire encounter was captured on video by a bystander and is circulating online.
Attorney General Pam Bondi wasted no time in responding to the incident. Dunn was fired from his position at the DOJ today. Bondi took to X (formerly Twitter) stating, “If you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you… This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ. You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement.”
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro echoed Bondi’s sentiment, issuing a stark warning: “Let me be clear, if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, be certain we will come after you with the full weight of the law. This alleged assault is no joke – it’s a serious crime, and those who think otherwise will learn just how gravely mistaken they are.” Dunn’s attempt to flee the scene was short-lived; he was quickly apprehended by authorities.
According to charging documents, Dunn readily admitted to the assault while being processed at the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District, stating, “I did it. I threw a sandwich.” Dunn made his initial appearance before federal Magistrate Judge G. Michael Harvey today and was released on his own recognizance. The investigation is being led by the Metropolitan Police Department, with prosecution handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
This case, docket number 25mj00138, adds another layer to the ongoing debate surrounding attacks on law enforcement and the increasingly polarized climate. While the motivation behind Dunn’s actions remains unclear, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those sworn to protect and serve – and the swift consequences awaiting those who cross the line.
