Ex-Menominee Cop Gets 15 Years for Child Exploitation
Basil L. O’Kimosh, Jr., a 40-year-old former patrol officer for the Menominee Tribal Police, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempting to exploit a child on the Menominee Indian Reservation.
O’Kimosh, of Keshena, was found guilty in March 2018 of attempting to sexually exploit a child after engaging in a sexually explicit chat with a person he believed to be 15 years old. Unbeknownst to O’Kimosh, he was actually chatting with an undercover detective with the Menominee Tribal Police.
According to court documents, O’Kimosh requested sexually explicit images from the undercover detective and sent a sexually explicit image of himself to the detective. The two agreed to meet at a location in Keshena for purposes of engaging in sex acts, at which point O’Kimosh was arrested.
Chief Judge William C. Griesbach, who presided over the case, noted the serious nature of the offense, describing it as “an attack on someone’s innocence.” The court also pointed out that O’Kimosh’s background, which included many positive qualities, actually made the offense worse, stating “there was no reason to engage in this behavior.”
O’Kimosh’s sentence includes 15 years in prison and 8 years of supervised release. The case was investigated by the Menominee Tribal Police, with assistance from the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew J. Maier.
The Menominee Tribal Police were commended for their role in the investigation, which involved a sting operation that caught O’Kimosh in the act. The case highlights the importance of law enforcement agencies working together to protect children from exploitation.
O’Kimosh’s arrest and conviction serve as a warning to anyone who would seek to exploit children for their own gratification. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
