Christopher Terranova, Child Exploitation, New York 2024

BROOKLYN, NY – Christopher Terranova, a former New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, will spend the next four decades behind bars after being sentenced to 40 years’ imprisonment today in federal court in Brooklyn. Terranova, 40, was convicted by a federal jury in November 2024 of sexually exploiting, attempting to sexually exploit, and enticing and coercing three 15-year-old boys and a 12-year-old boy. The sentence sends a stark message: abusing a position of authority to prey on children will not be tolerated.

The sentencing was announced by United States Attorney Joseph Nocella, Jr. for the Eastern District of New York and Christopher G. Raia, Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Nocella minced no words, stating the sentence was “a just outcome for the defendant’s abuse of his position as a police officer to groom and manipulate young boys, gain their trust, then sexually abuse and exploit them.” The victims, Nocella emphasized, “showed courage in coming forward to expose this predator.”

The extent of Terranova’s depravity is chilling. Between December 2019 and May 2023, the disgraced officer used social media platforms to target vulnerable boys, engaging them in sexually explicit conversations and attempting to coerce them into sending compromising photographs. He exploited his badge, leveraging his position as an NYPD officer to gain the trust of his victims – some of whom were already victims of other crimes. The investigation revealed a calculated pattern of grooming and manipulation, preying on the innocence of children.

A particularly disturbing case involved a 15-year-old boy who reported a robbery to the 121st Precinct on Staten Island. Terranova, capitalizing on the boy’s vulnerability, obtained his cellphone number from the police database and initiated contact, feigning concern. “Hey… it’s Chris Terranova the cop you met at the 121 that day with mom, i just wanted to reach out to see if you were doing ok after the incident,” he messaged, a transparent attempt to build rapport. He then steered the conversation towards the boy’s interest in law enforcement and ultimately requested contact on Snapchat and Instagram, where the abuse escalated.

The abuse wasn’t limited to online interactions. Terranova engaged in hands-on sex acts with two of his victims, including the 15-year-old son of an acquaintance. He lured the boy to a secluded location under the guise of a ride home from a birthday party. He also connected with a third 15-year-old victim in Texas via social media, again exploiting his position as a police officer to gain trust. The FBI’s Raia condemned Terranova’s actions as “unthinkable” and an “egregious abuse of authority,” highlighting the FBI’s commitment to protecting vulnerable victims.

The NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau assisted in the investigation, a crucial component of bringing Terranova to justice. While 40 years is a significant sentence, the scars left on these young victims will last a lifetime. This case serves as a grim reminder of the predators who hide in plain sight, and the importance of vigilance in protecting our children. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments.
