A healthcare worker at US Customs and Border Protection detention facilities in San Diego County padded his expense claims to the tune of almost $250,000, authorities say.
Neery Velazquez, 35, submitted 35 monthly travel claims between 2021 and 2024, falsely claiming he was entitled to reimbursement for lodging, meals, and incidental expenses.
Velazquez, who worked for a government contractor, fabricated documents to support his claims, including a fake lease agreement and rental receipt, to make it appear as if he was paying thousands of dollars more for rent than he actually was.
Between 2021 and 2024, Velazquez submitted $244,019.48 in false travel claims, with CBP reimbursing $181,082.85 before discrepancies were discovered.
A US Department of Homeland Security investigation led to Velazquez’s downfall, and he pleaded guilty to a single count of False Claim.
He’s scheduled to be sentenced on July 14, 2026, and faces the consequences of his deceit.
