Fake IDs Sold in Gretna Plead Guilty
A Gretna man was caught selling counterfeit Social Security cards, and now he’s facing serious time, Froilan Ignacio Miranda-Ramos, 30, pleaded guilty to four counts of transferring false Social Security cards in a Louisiana court.
According to court documents, Miranda-Ramos sold fake IDs on four separate occasions to confidential informants working with the United States Department of Homeland Security.
The investigation, led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, revealed that Miranda-Ramos was making a profit by selling these counterfeit cards, which could be used for identity theft and other illicit activities.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite praised the work of the United States Department of Homeland Security in investigating this matter, saying they did an excellent job in taking down this counterfeit operation.
Miranda-Ramos now faces a maximum term of imprisonment of fifteen years, a maximum fine of $250,000, a maximum term of supervised release of three years, and a mandatory $100 special assessment.
U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance set sentencing for December 16, 2015. Assistant U.S. Attorney Spiro G. Latsis is in charge of the prosecution. This case highlights the importance of keeping a close eye on individuals who sell counterfeit documents, as they can cause significant harm to individuals and the community at large.
In related news, authorities are urging individuals to be cautious when purchasing or selling documents online, as counterfeiters often use these platforms to sell their fake goods.
This is not the first time the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has cracked down on counterfeit operations in the state, and it is likely that more cases will be uncovered in the coming months.
The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the authorities, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is urging individuals to be vigilant when it comes to their personal documents and identity.
