Jaequan Bailey, a 31-year-old Jefferson Parish man, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm after a shooting in New Orleans on September 26, 2024. Bailey fired multiple shots from a Glock Model 19X, 9-millimeter caliber pistol, at two individuals in the area of Tullis Drive and Woodland Drive. The shooting occurred when Bailey, accompanied by another individual, arrived at the intersection in a black Acura and opened fire. The motive behind the shooting is not clear.
After the shooting, Bailey and his accomplice fled the scene in the Acura. New Orleans Police Department officers (NOPD) received a 911 call reporting the shooting and arrived to find a male victim with a gunshot wound to his upper right thigh. A search of the scene revealed five 9-millimeter cartridge casings and seventeen 7.62- millimeter casings.
In November 2024, an arrest warrant was issued for Bailey on an unrelated matter. NOPD officers, assisted by Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputies, executed the arrest warrant and a search warrant at Bailey’s residence in Elmwood, Louisiana. Deputies discovered the black Acura used in the shooting and searched Bailey’s apartment, where they found evidence linking him to the crime.
Bailey faces up to 15 years of imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and at least three years of supervised release. Sentencing is set for October 15, 2026. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat violent crime and reduce the proliferation of illegal firearms in New Orleans.
