Felon Sentenced for Gun Possession

A Huntington man was sentenced to two years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, authorities announced today.

Ricky Eugene Lewis, 35, pawned a Harrington & Richardson .20 gauge shotgun at the Kenova Pawn Shop in Kenova, West Virginia in June 2012, according to the government. The transaction was captured on the store’s surveillance video.

Lewis had been previously convicted of the felony offense of trafficking in opium. Because of the felony conviction, Lewis was prohibited from possessing a firearm.

The incident was not an isolated one, as Lewis was also involved in an incident in December 2011 in Wayne County, West Virginia, in which he stole, among other items, two .38 caliber revolvers and a .22 caliber pistol. Lewis claimed he traded these guns for drugs.

Today’s sentence was imposed by Chief United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers.

Lewis’s sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes. As a convicted felon, he had a responsibility to obey the law and stay away from firearms. Instead, he chose to ignore the law and put himself and others at risk.

The government is committed to keeping our communities safe from the scourge of gun violence and the illicit trafficking of firearms.
