Two felons are headed to the slammer after Lexington County cops caught them with guns. Derrick Jameel Joye, 24, and Jalen Shaprie Rutherford, 24, both of Lexington, were sentenced to over two years in federal prison for possessing firearms and ammo as convicted felons.
The drama unfolded on June 4, 2024, when the West Columbia Police Department pulled over a speeding vehicle. Joye, the front-seat passenger, ditched an AR-15-style pistol and ran through an apartment complex before getting caught. Rutherford, the driver, claimed he had a gun in the car, which cops found in the glove compartment.
Rutherford was out on bond for murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Joye had a prior conviction for second-degree assault and battery.
United States District Judge Mary Geiger-Lewis handed down 33 months for Joye and 30 months for Rutherford, plus a term of court-ordered supervision. There’s no parole in the federal system.
