A 24-year-old Mitchell man is headed to the joint for packing heat. Dakota Moore was sentenced to 2.5 years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon.
Law enforcement found Moore with a gun on August 5, 2025, after reports of shots fired. Moore’s prior felony conviction made him a prohibited person from possessing firearms.
Moore pleaded guilty on January 2, 2026, and was sentenced on April 13, 2026. He’ll also serve three years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment.
Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative, aims to tackle gun violence and transnational crime. The case is part of this effort and was investigated by the ATF and Rapid City Police Department.
