Tyrell West, Felony Strangulation, Maryland 2025

⏱ 2 min read

Tyrell West, a 31-year-old Maryland man, strangled and punched his former romantic partner in front of their child in a DC residence on November 26, 2025. The attack occurred after the victim rejected West’s sexual advance, prompting him to threaten and assault her. The victim regained consciousness after being punched and fled to a neighbor’s apartment with her child, calling 911 for help. The incident happened just two days after the victim told West she wanted to end their relationship.

West, who was released from prison in October 2025 after serving time for unlawful possession of a firearm, became enraged when the victim rejected his advance. He placed his hands around her neck, squeezing until she lost consciousness. The victim’s child was present during the attack, calling out to her as she lay unconscious.

Between April and June 2026, West violated a court order by calling the victim over 30 times. He was found guilty of strangulation, threats to do bodily harm, simple assault, and obstructing justice, as well as three counts of contempt on August 11, 2026. West faces sentencing on October 30, 2026, before Superior Court Judge Judith Pipe.

The guilty verdict ensures that West will be held accountable for his violent actions. US Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro stated that the verdict sends a message that violent offenders will be pursued and brought to justice.
