Tropical Storm Helene ravaged the Western District of North Carolina in September 2024, leaving a trail of destruction. But Christian Michael Hall had a different idea – to profit from the disaster. Hall, 49, of Drexel, NC, allegedly filed a false FEMA claim, seeking benefits for a property he didn’t own, rent, or reside in.
According to the indictment, Hall submitted an application for disaster assistance with FEMA on September 30, 2024, claiming the Valdese, North Carolina, property had sustained damage from the storm. But the indictment alleges he knew it was a lie – and that’s a felony.
U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson vowed to crack down on those who scam the system, saying, ‘Every dollar of federal assistance is needed to repair my district after the destruction caused by Tropical Storm Helene. Those committing fraud and wasting those valuable dollars will not be tolerated.’
Hall faces charges of defrauding the Federal Emergency Management Agency. If convicted, he could face serious time behind bars.
