Two Mexican nationals with ties to a powerful cartel have been sent to prison for distributing massive amounts of methamphetamine in Western North Carolina. Jesus Miguel Angel Gutierrez-Lopez and Lorenzo Lemus-Orozco, both from Mexico, were caught in a large-scale trafficking operation that brought high-grade meth to Catawba, Caldwell, and Watauga Counties.
According to court records, the two men conspired to sell kilogram quantities of meth from February 2024 to February 2025. Gutierrez-Lopez, who was in the US illegally, was the driver of the operation, while Lemus-Orozco, who was a legal resident, led the local drug trafficking organization.
On December 5, 2024, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol pulled over Gutierrez-Lopez’s truck in Caldwell County and found almost half a kilogram of meth inside. Gutierrez-Lopez was arrested on the spot, while Lemus-Orozco reportedly fled to Mexico.
The DEA and FBI worked together with local authorities to bring down the operation. Gutierrez-Lopez was sentenced to 70 months, while Lemus-Orozco received a longer sentence of 140 months. Both men will face deportation after serving their time.
