In a major blow to fentanyl trafficking in Utah, Jose Enrique Zuniga-Diaz, a 20-year-old illegal alien from Honduras, was sentenced to time served for his role in a massive drug bust. On March 19, 2025, law enforcement seized approximately 13,000 fentanyl pills during a controlled buy and search warrant execution in West Valley City, Utah. Zuniga-Diaz pleaded guilty on April 16, 2026, to possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute. His co-defendants, Diego Armando Campos-Fallas and Hugo Eduardo Miraba-Franco, were also sentenced to prison terms.
The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), resulted in the removal of a significant amount of deadly fentanyl from Utah’s streets. According to U.S. Attorney Melissa Holyoak, this case demonstrates the strength of law enforcement partnerships and their commitment to keeping communities safe.
Zuniga-Diaz, who was residing illegally in West Valley, Utah, will be remanded to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation proceedings after his release. His co-defendants, Campos-Fallas and Miraba-Franco, were sentenced to 42 months and 24 months in prison, respectively, and will also face deportation proceedings.
The sentencing of Zuniga-Diaz marks the conclusion of a successful operation that highlights the dangers of fentanyl trafficking and the importance of collaborative law enforcement efforts. As U.S. Attorney Holyoak noted, ‘Fentanyl is deadly, and in this case, our law enforcement partners and my office successfully removed 13,000 pills from our streets.’
