⏱ 2 min read

A major player in a New Jersey-based drug trafficking organization has been sentenced to 96 months in prison for peddling hundreds of kilograms of deadly fentanyl analogues. Michael Action, 51, of Bloomfield, NJ, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking conspiracy and money laundering, putting countless lives at risk across the state. The sentence was handed down in Newark federal court, marking a significant blow to the organization’s operations. Action’s conviction is the result of a joint investigation by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Action’s organization was responsible for importing and distributing massive quantities of fentanyl analogues, a synthetic opioid 50-100 times more potent than morphine. The group’s operations put entire neighborhoods at risk, contributing to the ongoing opioid crisis in New Jersey. The sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to dismantle drug trafficking networks.

HSI Newark Acting Special Agent in Charge Spiros Karabinas praised the sentence, stating that it demonstrates the agency’s commitment to stopping the flow of illicit drugs into communities. The investigation also targeted the organization’s financial infrastructure, including a money laundering scheme. Action’s co-conspirators, Thomas Padovano and William Panzera, were previously sentenced to 234 months and 144 months in prison, respectively.

The case highlights the ongoing threat of fentanyl trafficking in New Jersey and the need for continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies to combat the crisis. As U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer noted, the sentence sends a clear message to leaders of drug trafficking networks: they will be identified, investigated, and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
