WILMINGTON, Del. – In a grim victory for Delaware’s battle against fentanyl, Dwayne Fountain, 54, of Middletown, has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. Fountain was found guilty after a trial for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, four counts of possession with intent to distribute, and two counts of distribution of controlled substances. The sentence was pronounced by Chief U.S. District Judge Colm F. Connolly, who deemed Fountain the leader of a drug trafficking organization.
This landmark seizure included over ten kilograms of fentanyl, marking the largest known fentanyl bust in Delaware history. The case resulted from a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Delaware State Police, and Dover Police Department. Evidence at trial showed Fountain purchased drugs, added harmful ingredients like xylazine to increase potency, and used a kilogram press to repack them.
Agents discovered Fountain’s drug operation in his Middletown home, where they found the kilogram press and an apartment in Bear, Delaware, filled with drug inventory. Over 10.5 kilograms of fentanyl, over 200 grams of pure methamphetamine, over 3.5 kilograms of cocaine, and nearly 3 kilograms of heroin were seized.
The government emphasized Fountain’s knowledge that his sales posed a significant danger to the public, as evidenced by his recorded admission about the lethal strength of the drugs he sold. He also coached one of his sons in managing a drug operation, putting his family at risk.
U.S. Attorney Julianne E. Murray underscored the gravity of Fountain’s actions: “He sold drugs, especially fentanyl – for no reason but to make money.” Dover Police Chief Thomas Johnson credited law enforcement efforts with contributing to a 36% drop in overdose deaths in Delaware in 2024. Colonel William D. Crotty of the Delaware State Police reminded us of the dangers posed by synthetic opioids and praised the teamwork that brought Fountain to justice.
Fountain’s sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of fentanyl trafficking and sends a powerful message that selling drugs will lead to significant time in federal prison.
