Scott Andrew Traum, Food Stamp Scheme, Ohio 2023

DAYTON, Ohio – The Traum family has been hit with a stunning guilty plea in one of the most brazen food stamp fraud cases to rock Ohio. Scott Andrew Traum, 46; Joey Lightcap Traum, 44; Brandon Scott Traum, 22; and Dalton Andrew Traum, 21, all from Fairfield, Ohio, have each admitted their roles in a scheme that swapped SNAP benefits for illegal goods.

According to court documents, the family-owned U.S. Beef Cincinnati LLC was at the heart of an operation that defrauded the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) out of over $1 million. The defendants exchanged SNAP benefits for cash, Oxycodone, heroin, and marijuana, all while operating a door-to-door meat delivery service.

The Southern District of Ohio Task Force, with support from an additional 80 electronic and financial networks across the United States, has been pivotal in this investigation. The task force’s efforts have led to the sentencing of three other defendants: Keith Blankenship, 37; Gregory M. Brown, 37; and William N. King, 24. These men were sentenced to prison terms ranging from six months to 30 months, and ordered to pay substantial restitution.

Benjamin C. Glassman, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, praised the investigation led by Assistant United States Attorney Dwight K. Keller. The task force’s dedication has been instrumental in dismantling this criminal enterprise that exploited the vulnerable SNAP program.

The plea agreements were entered into today before U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Rose. The Traums face severe penalties for their crimes, which have shaken the trust in the SNAP program and disrupted local communities.
