Fitzgerald’s own Dr. Edd Colbert Jones, III, is behind bars after being indicted on 17 counts of narcotics charges, as reported by the United States Attorney’s office in the Middle District of Georgia.
According to sources, on April 12, 2016, Dr. Jones was hit with one count of conspiracy to distribute and dispense controlled substances including Oxycodone, Alprazolam, and Diazepam, and sixteen counts of unlawful dispensation of controlled substances.
Dr. Jones made his initial appearance before U.S. District Court Judge Charles H. Weigle on April 22, 2016, where he was advised of the charges against him, his rights, and the maximum possible penalties.
At that time, Dr. Jones pled not guilty and was granted terms of release on bond, allowing him to remain free until his trial.
The investigation into Dr. Jones’ activities was a joint effort between the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Ben Hill County Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant United States Attorney Leah E. McEwen is leading the prosecution in this case, working tirelessly to bring Dr. Jones to justice.
With a potential maximum penalty of twenty years imprisonment, a $1 million fine, or both, Dr. Jones’ future is now uncertain. A copy of the indictment is available upon request, and the public is advised to contact Pamela Lightsey, Public Information Officer, at 478-621-2603 or pam.lightsey@usdoj.gov for additional information.
This indictment serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, and those who engage in illicit activities will be held accountable for their actions.
