Floyd M. Thompson Pleads Guilty to Child Exploitation Charges in Indiana
EVANSVILLE, IN – In a shocking turn of events, Floyd M. Thompson, a 60-year-old resident of Evansville, pleaded guilty to possession and receipt of child pornography in federal court yesterday.
Thompson, a former postmaster at the Elberfeld Post Office branch, appeared in front of U.S. District Chief Judge Richard Young and admitted to engaging in the despicable crime. According to prosecutors, the investigation began in June 2013 when an undercover member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Southern Indiana Child Exploitation Task Force connected with a computer sharing sexually-explicit images of young children.
Law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at Thompson’s home on August 13, 2013, and seized his computer equipment. A preliminary forensic examination revealed thousands of images and videos of child pornography depicting young girls between the ages of 3 and 12 years old.
Thompson faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a lifetime term of supervised release. He could also be sentenced to registration as a sex offender. The case is part of an ongoing crackdown on child exploitation in Indiana, spearheaded by U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Hogsett’s ‘Operation Community Watch’ initiative.
Hogsett emphasized that those who exploit children will be held accountable for their actions. ‘You are not anonymous online – if you engage in this behavior, you will be identified and you will be prosecuted,’ he warned.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Evansville Police Department. Thompson’s sentencing is scheduled for August 10, 2014, at 11:00 a.m.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. In the last reporting year, the Office prosecuted 65 defendants, an increase of 25 over the prior year, and identified more than 120 child victims of sexual exploitation and abuse.
