25-Year Sentence for Child Pornography
Baltimore, Maryland – A 34-year-old man from Brunswick, Maryland, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for producing child pornography.
William H. Steinhaus IV, who was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake, will also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).
The investigation, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, began in 2014 after Steinhaus had a series of explicit conversations with other users on the instant messaging app Kik.
According to his plea agreement, Steinhaus took pictures of a two-year-old girl engaged in sexually explicit conduct and distributed them to approximately 25 other Kik users. He also exchanged messages with other users, including an undercover law enforcement officer, in which he discussed the sexual abuse of the toddler.
Steinhaus was arrested on December 9, 2014, after he sent images of the child and himself to the undercover officer. He was found to be in possession of his iPhone, which contained evidence of his crimes.
Nine other individuals who received the child pornography from Steinhaus have been arrested and charged in connection with the case. Five of these individuals have pleaded guilty to federal charges, and three have been sentenced to between five and 10 years in prison.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the sexual exploitation of children.
Steinhaus is also set to be sentenced on related charges in the Circuit Court for Frederick County, Maryland, on March 21, 2017.
