Ronald L. Fischer, one of Rhode Island’s most wanted fugitives, was caught after more than 20 years on the run. Fischer, who had been evading justice since 2005, was arrested in New York for a sex crime he committed in Rhode Island. The arrest was made possible by a coordinated effort between the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force, the FBI, and other law enforcement agencies. Fischer was apprehended while operating a 56-foot sailing vessel, The Silver Lining, off the coast of New York.
The investigation that led to Fischer’s arrest was intensive and involved the analysis of newly developed leads. The Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force, with the assistance of the FBI and other agencies, worked tirelessly to track down Fischer. The break in the case came when investigators discovered that Fischer was using an alias, Richard Graydon, and was operating the sailing vessel under that name.
Fischer was arrested on a United States Marshals Service Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution warrant. He had been a fugitive since fleeing Rhode Island during his criminal trial in 2005 and was subsequently convicted in absentia of First-Degree Sexual Assault. Fischer’s arrest brings an end to a decades-long manhunt and provides closure for the victims and their families.
The successful apprehension of Fischer is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of law enforcement agencies. The collaboration between the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force, the FBI, and other agencies demonstrates the importance of cooperation in bringing fugitives to justice.
