Garwin City Clerk Guilty of Stealing $70,000 in City Funds

A stunning case of public corruption has come to light in Garwin, Iowa, where former City Clerk Anna Leytham has pleaded guilty to stealing at least $70,000 from the city’s funds.

According to court documents, Leytham used her position of public trust to embezzle the funds, using city money to pay her personal credit cards or by causing the city to issue her unauthorized checks.

The theft is believed to have occurred over a 12-year period, from January 2001 to October 2013.

Leytham, who was the city clerk at the time of the theft, has admitted to using her position of trust to contribute significantly to the commission and concealment of her crime.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jacob Schunk and was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Leytham is set to be sentenced after a presentence report is prepared. She faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment; a fine equal to the greater of twice the gross gain to defendant resulting from the offense, twice the gross loss resulting from the offense, or $250,000; $100 in special assessments, and 3 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
