Former Bayou La Batre Man Sentenced for Stolen Firearms

A convicted felon has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for being in possession of stolen firearms in Bayou La Batre, Alabama.

George Edward Wilkinson, Jr., 25, was sentenced to 30 months in prison by Senior United States District Judge Callie V.S. Granade. Wilkinson was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release following his prison sentence and pay a $100 special assessment.

The case against Wilkinson began in October 2016, when the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a stolen car. A responding deputy stopped Wilkinson, who matched the description of one of the subjects and was running away from the scene. In his hand was a semiautomatic pistol, which was later determined to be stolen. Wilkinson also had several debit cards belonging to the person from whom the gun had been stolen.

Further investigation led to a nearby motel room, where a second stolen pistol was recovered. Wilkinson confessed to stealing both pistols.

The case was investigated by the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Sean P. Costello prosecuted the case for the United States.

The sentencing brings the case to a close. Wilkinson, a convicted felon, had previously been convicted of the felony offense of burglary.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat crime in Alabama and the consequences of being a convicted felon in possession of stolen firearms.
