Washington – The Georgetown Law Professor, Shon Hopwood, 50, has been found guilty by a Superior Court jury on charges of assault, contempt, and obstruction of justice. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the verdict.
Hopwood was convicted of three counts of simple assault, five counts of contempt, and two counts of obstructing justice. Sentencing is set for September 18, 2025.
Pirro emphasized the jury’s courage in demanding accountability against a faculty member who inflicted harm on his wife and attempted to manipulate the legal system. The incident involved Hopwood pushing his wife and throwing her into the kitchen after an argument, resulting in multiple injuries.
The defendant, identified as a convicted felon, fled the scene upon learning law enforcement had found his victim. Further investigation revealed a history of domestic abuse against his wife for several years. In addition to the recent charges, Hopwood was also charged with assaulting his wife in April 2023.
A trial date was initially scheduled for June 3, 2024, but the victim and her daughter failed to appear despite being subpoenaed. An investigation found that Hopwood had been contacting the victim in violation of a court order, pressuring her not to cooperate. This led to additional counts of contempt and obstruction of justice.
The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department with assistance from the United States Marshal Service. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Monisha Rao and Katherine Ballou prosecuted the case.
