A Dayton, Ohio man, Germel Hughes, 45, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his role in a fentanyl analogue trafficking operation.
Court documents reveal that on January 3, 2024, Hughes was involved in a conspiracy to distribute 100 grams or more of a fentanyl analogue. The scheme involved a confidential informant and a kilogram of fentanyl.
Law enforcement agents from the ATF, DEA, Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force and KSP had been monitoring the operation and arranged for a controlled purchase of the fentanyl. However, when the suspects arrived to make the sale, they were forcibly removed from their vehicle and the drugs were seized.
Further investigation revealed that Hughes had supplied 100 grams or more of the drugs intended to be distributed to the informant. He was subsequently charged with conspiracy to distribute 100 grams or more of a fentanyl analogue and aiding and abetting the intended distribution of 100 grams or more of a mixture containing a fentanyl analogue.
Hughes was sentenced to 222 months in prison by Chief U.S. District Judge David Bunning. Under federal law, he must serve 85 percent of his prison sentence.
Upon his release from prison, Hughes will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for 10 years. The investigation was a collaborative effort between several law enforcement agencies, including the ATF, DEA, Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force and KSP. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Winslow is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.
Cole and Young, two co-defendants in the case, have both pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges and have been sentenced to 132 months and 18 months, respectively.
The sentence serves as a reminder of the severity of fentanyl analogue trafficking and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat this type of crime.
