Defendant Fails to Report to Prison, Receives Additional 14 Months

ABINGDON, VIRGINIA – In a shocking turn of events, Gina Renee Lopez-Orfield, a 49-year-old Abingdon woman, was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison for failing to report to her previously ordered prison sentence.

Lopez-Orfield, who was convicted in November 2015 of distributing methamphetamine, was initially sentenced to 78 months in prison. However, she failed to report to the Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia on March 29, 2016, as instructed by the court.

According to the United States Attorney’s office, Lopez-Orfield was informed by the Bureau of Prisons and the U.S. Marshals Service that she was to begin serving her sentence on March 29, 2016. Instead, she chose to ignore the courts instructions and avoid her prison sentence.

United States Attorney John P. Fishwick Jr. stated, ‘Our system of justice runs on the foundation that individuals will follow the instructions given to them by the court. When individuals fail to listen to the instructions of the court, they will be held accountable and face additional punishment.’

Lopez-Orfield’s failure to report to prison has resulted in her receiving an additional 14 months in federal prison, to be served consecutively to her previously ordered 78-month period of incarceration.

The investigation of the case was conducted by the United States Marshals Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Johnson County, Tennessee Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Kevin Jayne prosecuted the case for the United States.

Lopez-Orfield’s sentencing serves as a reminder that the justice system will not tolerate individuals who choose to ignore the law and avoid their responsibilities. Her case is a stark example of the consequences of failing to follow the instructions of the court.
