Gilbert Gonyea, 60, of Syracuse, New York, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his involvement in the disturbing world of child pornography.
According to authorities, Gonyea was sentenced to serve 72 months in prison for the receipt of child pornography, marking a significant victory for those fighting against this heinous crime.
As part of his guilty plea, Gonyea admitted to receiving over 1,500 images and approximately 9 videos depicting child pornography. This disturbing collection was discovered by investigators during a search of his residence on November 5, 2014.
The search uncovered numerous DVDs and CDs containing the illicit material, which Gonyea had labeled ‘Downloads’ with corresponding dates or years for when he received them from the internet.
Chief United States District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby handed down the sentence, which included a life term of supervised release to begin after Gonyea’s release from prison. Gonyea was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment.
As a result of his conviction, Gonyea will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison, a harsh fate that serves as a reminder of the severity of his crimes.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Lisa M. Fletcher and Sahar L. Amandolare, who worked tirelessly to bring justice to the victims of Gonyea’s actions.
Launched in 2006, Project Safe Childhood is a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to combat the exploitation of children online. The initiative has made significant strides in locating, apprehending, and prosecuting individuals involved in this heinous crime.
