BOSTON – Carlos Guaico-Bano, a 35-year-old Ecuadorian national with a string of illegal attempts to enter the United States, was handed a six-month prison sentence yesterday by U.S. District Court Judge Allison D. Burroughs. The sentence will be followed by one year of supervised release. Upon completion of this term, Guaico-Bano is once again subject to deportation.
The saga began in Brackettville, Eagle Pass, and El Paso, Texas, where Border Patrol encountered Guaico-Bano on four separate occasions between February and March 2020. Each time, he was returned to Mexico as he had no lawful right to be in the U.S.
Despite his removal, Guaico-Bano returned to the U.S. five times before being caught again in Lawrence, Mass., in November 2021. There, he faced charges of assault and battery, resulting in an 18-month suspended sentence.
In September 2020, Guaico-Bano was apprehended for his sixth illegal attempt to cross the border. He was ordered removed from the United States but managed to reenter without permission once more, leading to yesterday’s sentencing.
The case against Guaico-Bano was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke A. Goldworm of the Major Crimes Unit. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston.
Boston’s federal court system has once again sent a stern message regarding illegal reentry, ensuring that Guaico-Bano will pay for his repeated attempts to defy the law.
