A brazen act of violence shook Manhattan’s streets last July 19, 2025, when Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, a Dominican national, allegedly shot a federal Customs and Border Protection officer in the face.
Nunez, an undocumented immigrant, was arrested and charged with possessing ammunition as an illegal alien. On March 24, 2026, he pleaded guilty to the crime before U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the shooting was a direct threat to law enforcement professionals who risk their lives to keep the public safe. ‘Gun-toting criminals threaten our families, our communities, and our law enforcement professionals,’ said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton.
Nunez is scheduled to be sentenced on September 1, 2026. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
