WASINGTON DC – Francis Bankins, 37, a resident of the nation’s capital, has been handed an 80-month prison sentence for his involvement in an unlawful possession of a firearm case.

Bankins was found guilty of the crime, which carries a significant prison sentence, and was subsequently sentenced by the Honorable Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on June 11, 2018, at approximately 5:05 P.M. when officers from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Narcotics Special Investigations Division (NSID) conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with heavily tinted windows in the area of 3101 Naylor Road, S.E., Washington, D.C.

Bankins, who was seated in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, repeatedly refused to exit the vehicle but eventually did so after being asked by the officers. As he exited the vehicle, an officer observed that the right front pocket of Bankins’ jacket was weighed down with what he believed to be a weapon.

Recovered from Bankin’s jacket pocket was a .357 Magnum revolver with five rounds in the cylinder. This discovery led to Bankins’ arrest and subsequent prosecution for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a person convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.

U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu and Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department Peter Newsham praised the work of the officers from MPD’s NSID Division, who played a crucial role in bringing the case to justice. They also acknowledged the efforts of those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, including Assistant U.S. Attorney Emory V. Cole, Paralegal Specialist Teesha Tobias, former Paralegal Specialist Jeannette Litz, and Legal Assistant Emma Atlas.

With a prison sentence of 80 months and three years of supervised release awaiting him, Bankins’ future looks bleak. The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in unlawful activities, particularly those related to firearms.
