New Orleans, Louisiana – The grimy streets of Hammond witnessed a federal crime story unfold as Kylin Sexton (‘SEXTON’), 25, a resident of the city, faced justice for violating the Federal Controlled Substances Act. On July 24, 2025, in a court ruled by U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown, SEXTON was sentenced to time served for his possession of marijuana and cocaine hydrochloride.
According to court records, the descent into criminality began on May 18, 2022, when the Ponchatoula Police Department responded to a retail establishment following a complaint about Tyshon Coleman’s firearm possession. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered SEXTON and Coleman inside a vehicle. The encounter escalated quickly as Coleman refused police commands, leading to the discovery of a Glock Model 17 handgun with a machine gun conversion device.
SEXTON was also found in possession of marijuana and cocaine hydrochloride packaged for distribution, hidden in a green backpack. This case hit closer to home when it came to light that Tyshon Coleman, SEXTON’s cousin, had been involved in the same vehicle and would later face his own sentence for firearms violations.
Coleman pleaded guilty to possession of firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and possession of a machine gun on September 19, 2024. He was sentenced to 106 months imprisonment on December 19, 2024. SEXTON’s sentence came with an additional requirement of three years of supervised release following his release from prison.
The investigation into this case was a joint effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Brittany Reed of the Violent Crime/Strike Force Unit prosecuted the charges.
SEXTON’s sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking on the streets of Louisiana, with federal authorities remaining committed to dismantling criminal networks and ensuring public safety.
