TULSA, Okla. – A federal jury has once again convicted Elga Eugene Harper, a 43-year-old homeless man, for his relentless attack on a 72-year-old nun, U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson announced.
Harper was found guilty of Kidnapping in Indian Country; Aggravated Sexual Abuse by Force and Threat in Indian Country; Assault with a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to do Bodily Harm in Indian Country; and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in Indian Country. The victim, who knew Harper, had invited him into her home to assist with repairs.
According to court documents, in May 2022, Harper, after being turned away from work, requested to use the restroom. When he did not return as expected, the nun discovered him in her bedroom, naked and attacking her. She was bound and choked for over four hours before he stole her possessions and fled.
Harper’s initial conviction in February 2023 was overturned after an appeal, leading to a retrial following the victim’s death. The jury heard audio from the 911 call and witnessed the brutal injuries inflicted upon the nun. Harper is a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and remains in custody pending sentencing.
The FBI and Tulsa Police Department conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Melody Nelson, Valeria Luster, and Kenneth Elmore prosecuting the case.
