Staten Island Man Pleads Guilty to Hate Crime Conspiracy
Brian Carranza, a 21-year-old Staten Island resident, has pleaded guilty to a federal hate crime conspiracy charge. The crime involved a plot to assault African-American residents on Staten Island, reportedly in retaliation for President Barack Obama’s presidential victory.
According to court documents, Carranza’s actions were motivated by a desire to harm African-Americans in response to Obama’s election. The scheme was uncovered by the FBI and the New York City Police Department.
The case is being prosecuted by Special Litigation Counsel Kristy Parker of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Pamela Chen.
Carranza faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. A sentencing date has not been set by the court.
