Hate Crime: Nampa Man Charged in Murder of Gay Victim

Kelly Schneider, 23, of Nampa, Idaho, has been charged with a federal hate crime in connection with the murder of a gay man at Gott’s Point near Lake Lowell in Canyon County. Schneider was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 10, 2017, and is set to be arraigned tomorrow, January 24, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. before Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald E. Bush.

According to the indictment, Schneider willfully assaulted the victim, S.N., because of the victim’s sexual orientation. The assault resulted in the death of S.N. Schneider is also facing charges in state court for first-degree murder.

The charge of willful assault based on sexual orientation, resulting in death, carries a punishment of up to life in prison, supervised release of not more than five years, and a $250,000 fine.

The investigation into Schneider’s actions was conducted by the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Treasure Valley Metro Violent Crime Task Force. The case is being investigated federally by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

An indictment is a means of charging a person with criminal activity. It is not evidence. The person is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The assault occurred in the early morning hours of April 29, 2016, at Gott’s Point. Schneider’s arraignment is set for tomorrow, and a trial date will be set at that time.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office does not identify victims by name in charging documents. The office is working to bring justice to the family of the victim in this tragic case.
