Healthcare Thief Sentenced

A Mission woman was sentenced to 1 year probation on each count of theft in connection with healthcare and larceny, to be served concurrently, a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund and restitution in the amount of $357.93. Tisha Leader Charge, age 33, was handed down the sentence by U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on April 12, 2013.

Leader Charge was working at the Bureau of Indian Affairs Indian Health Service Hospital as a pharmacy technician during the time of the incidents. She admitted to stealing money out of co-employees’ belongings in the breakroom and fraudulently obtaining prescription medications from the pharmacy between January 1, 2012 and September 30, 2012.

The investigation was conducted by the Office of the Inspector General, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case. Leader Charge was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 14, 2012 and pled guilty to the above charges on February 8, 2013.

Leader Charge admitted to stealing under $1,000 in money and also taking prescribed medications not picked up by a patient and then entering the medications in the computer system as being restocked. She also gave some of the stolen medications to other people.

The pharmacy technician would ‘short’ prescriptions by taking a few of the prescribed pills out of the bottle before dispensing it to the patients. This is a serious breach of trust, especially when working in a healthcare setting.

The total amount of money stolen was under $1,000, and the total amount of restitution is $357.93. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining trust and integrity in the healthcare system.

Tisha Leader Charge’s actions not only harmed her co-workers but also compromised the integrity of the healthcare system. The sentence handed down by U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno is a significant step towards justice being served.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, and the investigation was conducted by the Office of the Inspector General. This case highlights the need for accountability in the healthcare system and the importance of reporting any suspicious activity.
