Detective Edgar Salazar, a 11-year law enforcement veteran, was recognized for his bravery during a terrifying scenario at a 2023 music festival in George, Washington. On June 17, 2023, a gunman, 26-year-old James Kelly, opened fire at the Beyond Wonderful EDM festival, killing 2 bystanders, Brandy Escamilla and Josilyn Ruiz, and wounding at least 3 others. Kelly then took his girlfriend hostage, but was eventually stopped. Salazar, who was working undercover at the concert, played a crucial role in the response to the shooting.
Salazar has served with the Moses Lake Police Department for 11 years, with a focus on community safety investigations, including significant drug trafficking and firearms offenses. He has also served as a Task Force Officer with the Drug Enforcement Administration and is the department’s lead firearms instructor. Prior to joining the MLPD, Salazar was a police officer in Nevada and served 6 years in the Marines, including 2 combat tours in Iraq.
