Hill City Man Sentenced for Marijuana and Gun Crimes
A Hill City man has been sentenced to 37 months in prison for his role in a marijuana and gun trafficking operation in South Dakota. Levi Allen Thompson, 32, was convicted of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and possession of a stolen firearm.
Thompson was sentenced by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on April 21, 2014, after pleading guilty to the charges on December 20, 2013. The punishment also included 3 years of supervised release and a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The investigation into Thompson’s activities began on December 13, 2012, when a safe containing 158 grams of marijuana was seized in Pennington County, South Dakota. The safe belonged to Thompson, and he was aware that it contained marijuana and intended to distribute at least part of it.
Thompson also possessed a stolen Ruger .357 revolver between November 2012 and December 2012, which he knew had been taken from someone else.
The case was investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ted L. McBride prosecuted the case.
Thompson was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after his sentencing. His conviction serves as a reminder of the seriousness of marijuana and gun trafficking in South Dakota and the consequences that come with it.
