The drama began on October 19, 2023, when the Lea County Drug Task Force (LCDTF) received information about drugs in a vehicle in Hobbs. Agents stopped the car, identifying Johnson as the passenger. During the stop, they found a handgun and alerted a canine unit to the smell of narcotics.

Johnson’s vehicle was seized pending a search warrant, which revealed approximately 425 grams of fentanyl pills, 98 net grams of methamphetamine, and three firearms. On November 9, 2023, after a second high-speed chase that crossed state lines, LCDTF agents tracked Johnson to Hobbs, where they found her after a crash and foot pursuit.

Inside the backpack Johnson had discarded during the chase, deputies found 1,129 grams of fentanyl pills and 814 grams of methamphetamine. The vehicle held an additional 13 grams of meth, 616.6 grams of liquid fentanyl, multiple rifles, magazines, and ammunition.

On April 7, 2025, Johnson pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, as well as using a firearm in relation to drug trafficking. She will be on supervised release for five years upon her release from prison.

The investigation was led by the DEA’s El Paso Division, with assistance from LCDTF, Yoakum County Sheriff’s Office, and Gaines County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Williams prosecuted the case.
