Honduran National Jailed for Illegal Re-Entry

A Honduran national has been sentenced to 3 years imprisonment for illegally re-entering the United States, despite two prior felony convictions and a previous deportation.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite announced the sentencing of JUAN HUMBERTO HERNANDEZ-YONES, a 33-year-old citizen of Honduras, who was found guilty of a single count of indictment charging him with illegal re-entry of a removed alien.

According to court documents, HERNANDEZ-YONES was found in the United States on June 30, 2016, after having been deported on July 15, 2011. The defendant had two prior felony convictions for illegal re-entry, including one from the Eastern District of Louisiana in 2008.

U.S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt handed down the 36-month sentence, following which HERNANDEZ-YONES will be surrendered to the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for removal proceedings.

U.S. Attorney Polite praised the work of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement in investigating this matter, and Assistant United States Attorney Emily K. Greenfield led the prosecution.

As a result of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s efforts, HERNANDEZ-YONES now faces the consequences of his actions, and the community can rest assured that those who break our laws will be held accountable.

The case is a stark reminder of the importance of immigration laws and the consequences of those who choose to disregard them.
