Honduran National Sentenced for Illegal Re-entry

Luis Misael Madrid-Romero, a 42-year-old Honduran national, has been sentenced to 46 months in prison for illegally re-entering the United States. According to court documents, Madrid-Romero pled guilty to one count of an indictment admitting he was an alien who was previously removed and was knowingly and unlawfully found in the United States in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana without the Attorney General or Secretary of Homeland Security having expressly consented to his reapplication for admission into the United States.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier, who also ordered that Madrid-Romero be placed on two years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment. During this time, the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.

Madrid-Romero’s sentence was subject to an enhancement based on a previous aggravated felony conviction. The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE), and was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Robert Weir.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana announced the sentence, with U.S. Attorney Dana Boente stating that the prosecution of individuals who illegally re-enter the United States is a top priority for his office.

Madrid-Romero’s illegal re-entry has been deemed a serious offense, and his sentence reflects the severity of the crime. The prosecution of such cases serves as a warning to others who may be considering violating U.S. immigration laws.

As the investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana is committed to enforcing immigration laws and protecting the security and integrity of the United States.

Madrid-Romero’s sentence marks the latest in a series of high-profile cases involving immigration offenses in the Eastern District of Louisiana. The U.S. Attorney’s Office continues to work closely with law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute individuals who engage in such crimes.
