Jackson Gunman Stewart Admits Failed Dollar Store Heist
JACKSON, MS – Thirty-one-year-old Torrance Stewart of Jackson admitted Wednesday to attempting to rob a local dollar store at gunpoint. The plea, entered in federal court, details a brazen but ultimately unsuccessful robbery that left a store clerk shaken and Stewart in custody.
According to court documents, the incident unfolded on May 2, 2022. Stewart entered the unnamed business with clear intent: to steal. He didn’t bother with subtlety, immediately brandishing a pistol and threatening the store clerk to hand over cash from the register. The clerk complied, but fate – or perhaps a faulty machine – intervened. The cash register malfunctioned, refusing to dispense the money. Frustrated, Stewart bolted, fleeing the scene on foot.
The Jackson Police Department (JPD) responded swiftly to the attempted robbery. Officers weren’t left searching for long; Stewart was apprehended in a nearby neighborhood, bringing a quick end to his brief criminal endeavor. The firearm used in the attempted robbery is now evidence in the case.
Stewart now faces the consequences of his actions. He is scheduled to be sentenced on December 15, 2025, and could receive a maximum sentence of 20 years behind federal bars. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge, who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant statutory factors. Assistant U.S. Attorney C. Brett Grantham is leading the prosecution.
The announcement of Stewart’s guilty plea came from Acting U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Lemon of the Southern District of Mississippi and ATF Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson. The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Jackson Police Department.
This case isn’t being handled in isolation. It’s part of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling transnational criminal organizations, combating illegal immigration, and suppressing violent crime. The operation streamlines resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN), signaling a broader federal push against criminal activity.
