Third Degree Burglary Rocks Timber Lake
On January 6, 2013, a downtown business in Timber Lake, South Dakota was allegedly broken into, leaving authorities scrambling to solve the case. Fast forward several months, and the case has taken a dramatic turn with the indictment of Jake Morrison, a 31-year-old resident of Eagle Butte.
Morrison, identified as the prime suspect, was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 13, 2013. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on February 20, 2013, where he pled not guilty to the indictment.
The maximum penalty upon conviction for Third Degree Burglary is a whopping 10 years in custody, a fine of $250,000, or both, along with 3 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation into the alleged break-in is being conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson is leading the prosecution of the case. Morrison was subsequently remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
A trial date has not been set, and the case is ongoing. The charge against Morrison is merely an accusation, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
For now, the people of Timber Lake can only wait and see the outcome of this high-profile case. Will justice be served, or will Morrison walk free? Only time will tell.
