Jamaal Black, Armed Robbery, Florida 2021

RIVERVIEW, FL – Jamaal Black, 21, of Riverview, Florida, will spend the next 15 years in federal prison after being sentenced for two separate armed robberies. U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber handed down the sentence on Thursday, following Black’s guilty plea on January 26, 2023. The robberies, committed in early 2021, demonstrate a clear pattern of brazen violence and disregard for human life, according to court documents.

The first incident occurred on January 30, 2021, at a Riverview gas station. Black entered the establishment brandishing a pistol equipped with an extended magazine. He immediately aimed the weapon at the store clerk, demanding cash. When the clerk refused to comply, Black attempted to bypass the counter and a physical altercation ensued. During the struggle, Black fired a single shot, striking the clerk in the arm. The wounded clerk fell to the ground, bleeding profusely.

Undeterred, Black then leveled the firearm at the injured clerk, repeating his demand for money. Terrified and seriously wounded, the clerk surrendered the contents of the cash register – a paltry $200 – to Black, who then fled the scene. The clerk received immediate medical attention, but the incident left lasting physical and emotional scars.

Just two months later, on March 14, 2021, Black struck again. This time, he exploited a juvenile girl, using her to set up a marijuana transaction with a local drug dealer. The girl went to the dealer’s home under the pretense of making a purchase. As the dealer retrieved the marijuana, Black ambushed him, pressing the firearm to the dealer’s head and demanding the drugs. The dealer, fearing for his life, threw the marijuana at Black, who then made off with the contraband.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Charlie D. Connally prosecuted the case, securing the 15-year sentence. Authorities emphasized that this case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program focused on reducing violent crime and gun violence at the local level.

The Department of Justice launched a strengthened version of PSN in May 2021, prioritizing community trust, support for violence prevention organizations, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. While this conviction offers some measure of justice for the victims, it also serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by armed criminals and the importance of collaborative law enforcement efforts to keep communities safe.
