BOSTON – The grim streets of Boston were hit with a fresh wave of justice as Jamaican national Tanya James, 53, was sentenced to six months in prison for illegal reentry into the United States after her deportation.
In a swift move by U.S. District Court Judge Margaret R. Guzman, James faced the brunt of the law for her brazen act of defiance against immigration laws. The defendant is now firmly in the clutches of deportation proceedings.
The saga began in July 2025 when James pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. She had been indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2025, marking the culmination of a case that had been brewing for months.
James’ criminal history is as long as it is notorious. Back in 2003, she was convicted of possession of cocaine base with intent to distribute and distribution of cocaine base. Ordered removed from the United States and deported to Jamaica in 2004, James returned to her homeland briefly before making her way back to the U.S. again in 2011, where she was once more ordered removed and deported to Jamaica in 2012.
According to court documents, it was in March 2024 when James was charged with motor vehicle offenses. But the real twist came on or about May 12, 2025, when immigration officials took her into custody after discovering she had returned to the United States without permission.
The case has been a joint effort between United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Acting Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston, who made the announcement yesterday. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristen Noto of the Worcester Branch Office is at the helm of the prosecution.
