Double Murderer Sentenced to Life in Prison

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a shocking turn of events, two members of the Charlotte Bloods gang, Jamell Lamon Cureton and Malcolm Jarrel Hartley, were sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 2014 double-murder of Douglas and Deborah London in Lake Wylie, S.C., and related charges.

Cureton, 24, and Hartley, 23, were both found guilty of their crimes and received life sentences, effectively ending their reign of terror over the community. The sentencing hearings were presided over by U.S. District Judge Max O. Cogburn, Jr.

U.S. Attorney Jill Westmoreland Rose praised the court’s decision, stating, ‘Today, the Court handed down life sentences to Cureton and Hartley for the murders of three innocent people whose families are still dealing with the loss of their loved ones.’

Cureton, also known as ‘Assassin’ and ‘Murda Mel,’ was a member of the Charlotte-area UBN and held the rank of 5-Star General. Hartley, also known as ‘Silent’ and ‘Bloody Silent,’ was a member of the Charlotte-area Valentine Blood set of the UBN and held the rank of 2-Star General.

The murders were part of a larger scheme by the Bloods gang to maintain their power and control over the community. The gang’s leadership authorized Hartley to proceed with the murder of the Londons, and on October 23, 2014, Johnson drove Hartley to South Carolina, where he shot and killed the couple at their home.

The case serves as a warning to violent gangs that the justice system will not tolerate their actions. ‘Our message to these violent gangs: We are resolute, we are prepared and we will ensure you are punished mightily for gang violence and community intimidation,’ said U.S. Attorney Rose.
