New York Attorney General Letitia James has taken a stand against the Trump administration by leading a coalition of 22 other attorneys general in seeking a court order to unfreeze essential funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Despite multiple court orders, including a preliminary injunction issued on March 6, the administration has continued to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars in grants to states. This action puts life-saving emergency preparedness and recovery programs at risk.
The coalition filed a motion to enforce the preliminary injunction, calling for the immediate unfreezing of FEMA funds. Attorney General James emphasized, “The Trump administration is putting lives at risk by continuing to freeze disaster relief and emergency preparedness funds to states.”
James and her team argue that the funding freeze, implemented through actions like a January 27 memorandum from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), has illegally withheld federal funds for states, including New York. This has affected access to Medicaid dollars and support for nonprofit groups.
The recent impact of the funding freeze on public safety, disaster response, and emergency preparedness is evident, especially with the freezing of millions in grants to the New York Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES). These funds are crucial for supporting disaster preparation and recovery programs.
Attorney General James has been at the forefront of this legal battle since January 28, when she sued the administration over its freeze of federal funds. The coalition’s efforts have led to temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions, but the funds remain frozen as of March 6. This ongoing struggle highlights the urgency to restore essential funding for disaster relief across the nation.
