Identity Thief Sentenced to 37 Months in Prison

A Miami-Dade resident has been sentenced for his involvement in a stolen identity scheme. Jean-Elguentino Cayo, 26, of Miami Gardens, was sentenced today to 37 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

According to court documents, starting in December 2012 through June 2013, Cayo sold approximately 400 names, dates of birth, and social security numbers belonging to other persons to a confidential informant and undercover law enforcement officer in exchange for money.

The defendant had no authorization to traffic in the names, dates of births, and social security numbers belonging to other persons and acted with the intent to defraud.

Wifredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, commended the investigative efforts of ICE-HSI and IRS-CI. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Maderal.

The identity theft scheme was a complex operation that involved the sale of sensitive personal information. The defendant’s actions put the victims at risk of financial and personal harm.

The Miami-Dade resident’s sentence serves as a warning to those who engage in similar activities. Law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to bring perpetrators to justice and protect the public from identity theft and other forms of cybercrime.
